
Getting the Heat Right in Your PET Blowing Line
If you’ve ever dealt with PET bottle production, you know the preheating stage is where the magic happens—or where everything goes wrong. That’s why we build our shortwave halogen lamps the way we do. We use a tungsten filament wrapped in a quartz envelope and filled with halogen gas. Why? Because it stops the filament from evaporating. It means we can crank up the heat to those high operating temperatures without the lamps burning out every five minutes. Let’s talk power. In a bottle machine, speed is everything. We spec these lamps for high wattage and voltage so they heat up almost instantly. By keeping the voltage high, we can drop the current draw, which keeps your wiring from getting too hot. You need that intense heat density. The PET preform is rotating through the oven fast; if the wattage is too low, the plastic won’t get soft enough before it hits the blow mold. And if that happens, you’re just making scrap. The nitty-gritty on build quality. We stick with high-purity quartz. It lets the shortwave infrared radiation pass through without losing steam. Some of our lamps even have a special coating that bounces the heat back toward the preform. It’s a simple trick, but it saves a lot of energy. As for the plugs, we use standard R7s or Sk15 connectors. They’re basic, reliable, and they just fit. You can swap them into most industry-standard ovens without a headache. Plus, they create a tight seal, so you don’t have to worry about arcing when the system is cycling at high frequencies. One thing to watch out for… These lamps react fast, which is great for high-speed lines. You can even zone them to tweak your heat profile. But here’s the catch: high-wattage tubes put out a lot of heat. It’s a heavy load for your oven’s ventilation. If your cooling fans aren’t strong enough to pull that hot air away from the reflectors, you might end up warping the oven housing or frying your control electronics. Keep those fans humming, and these lamps will do the heavy lifting for you.
