Getting the Heat Right in Horse Solariums
The problem with most off-the-shelf lamps is that they’re sloppy. They throw energy everywhere—lots of bright light and surface heat that just sits on the skin. If you’re trying to warm up a horse’s muscles, that’s a waste. You don’t want to scorch the outside; you want to get deep inside the tissue. That’s why we obsess over the spectral shift.
Deep Heat, Not Stinging Heat
We tweaked the filament and the gas fill to change how the lamp actually behaves. Instead of that sharp, “stinging” heat you get from short-wave lamps, we pushed the energy into a medium-wave distribution. Why does that matter? Because it aligns with how water in equine muscle actually absorbs heat. It feels different. The heat soaks in. It’s a deeper, more relaxing warmth that gets the muscles loose and ready to work much faster.
The Nitty-Gritty Hardware
These aren’t your average tubes. We use heavy-wall quartz because, frankly, high-wattage lamps tend to bow when they get hot. We can’t have that. Depending on the size of your solarium, the power density per centimeter is the big variable. We’ve got different lengths and voltages to make sure they fit your specific chassis without any fuss. One quick heads-up: if you pack a lot of wattage into a small space, things get hot. Really hot. If your housing doesn’t have a way to breathe, you’re going to cook your reflectors and melt your sockets.**Make sure you have a dedicated airflow path.**Your lamps will last a lot longer if they can breathe.
Fitting Them In
We kept things simple with standard R7s or SK15 connectors. They should slide right into your existing setup. We also added a coating to the quartz. It filters out those UV spikes that can irritate a horse’s skin, keeping things safe and comfortable. And here is the best part: we test every single batch. With budget lamps, you usually see a 10-15% variance in heat output, which means one spot of the solarium is lukewarm and another is roasting. With ours, the thermal dose is the same across the whole system. Every zone works exactly the same way.
