The nitty-gritty on power Here’s the thing about Felder systems: they rely on short-wave infrared to get that surface hot, fast. But you can’t just throw any bulb in there. If the wattage or voltage is off, you’re looking at one of two things: a machine that barely warms up or a blown fuse that kills your afternoon. The oils from your skin leave a residue that creates a “hot spot.” Once the lamp heats up, that spot can actually cause the quartz to crack. It’s a pain. Just give the tube a quick wipe with some isopropyl alcohol before you slide it in. One last thing. High-wattage lamps get incredibly hot. If you’re pushing your machine to the limit, make sure your ventilation is wide open. And keep an eye on your reflectors. If they get caked in sawdust, your lamp has to work twice as hard to get the same result, which just wears the element out faster. Keep it clean, and it’ll last.
