Stop Wasting Money on Wood Drying
If you run a furniture shop, you know the feeling. You look at your power bill and realize you’re basically paying to heat the entire building just to get a few panels dry. Traditional convection heating is a slog. It wastes so much energy warming up the air before the wood even notices a difference. We do things differently. We swap those old systems out for shortwave infrared lamps. Instead of heating the room, these lamps go straight for the moisture inside the wood. It’s a completely different kind of heat. Think of it like the sun on your skin on a cold day. You don’t feel the air getting warmer; you feel the heat hitting you instantly. We use quartz glass envelopes to make this happen. Because it’s radiation, not convection, you aren’t wasting electricity on the shop floor. You just flip the switch, the heat hits the surface, and you’re moving. When it comes to the gear, we keep it simple. For Felder-compatible setups, we use halogen-filled quartz tubes. We make sure the voltage matches your industrial 3-phase power, so you don’t have to deal with those massive, clunky step-down transformers taking up space. The connectors are standard R7s or SK15, so they just slide right in. And a heads-up: we only use quartz. Cheap glass is a nightmare—it cracks the second you start cycling the power. Quartz can handle the thermal shock, which means it actually lasts. Now, there is a trade-off. You’ll save a ton on electricity, but the heat is intense. If you mount the lamps too close or leave them on too long, you’ll scorch your veneer. It happens fast. You’ve got to spend a little time calibrating your timers and getting the distance just right. You’ll also want to make sure your cooling fans can keep up so the housing doesn’t overheat during a long shift. If you really want to do it right, wire the whole thing into a PID controller. It smooths out those nasty power spikes when you start up, which keeps your lamps from burning out early. It’s a small tweak that makes the whole process feel a lot tighter.
